Το έργο “A Pair of Brand New Eyes” είναι ένας εσωτερικός μονόλογος, μια αυτοβιογραφική σειρά που εξερευνά τη θηλυκότητα και τη σύνδεσή της με τη φύση στο ιδιαίτερο τοπίο του Κατάρ.
Ο παλμός της δημόσιας ζωής προσφέρει μία αίσθηση γαλήνης και προστασίας, φέρει όμως το βάρος μιας στεγνής και σιωπηλής συνύπαρξης. Ένα σύνολο πολιτιστικών και γεωπολιτικών κανόνων είναι βαθιά ριζωμένο στην κοινωνία˙ μια κοινωνία που ανανεώνεται συνεχώς κυρίως με ανδρικό πληθυσμό. Επιπλέον, η δημόσια ζωή μεταφέρεται εξ ολοκλήρου σε κλειστούς χώρους για το μισό του έτους, λόγω υψηλών θερμοκρασιών. Σε αυτές τις συνθήκες ο εαυτός δοκιμάζεται, έρχεται αντιμέτωπος με τις πολλαπλές πλευρές του — ισχυρές και αδύναμες, φωτεινές και σκοτεινές. Η κοινωνική απόσταση και η συναισθηματική αποστασιοποίηση μπορεί να οδηγήσουν σε μια καταστολή του αληθινού εαυτού, και κατ’ επέκταση σε ένα είδος μοναχικότητας ή μοναξιάς.
Ο ιδιωτικός χώρος έχει γίνει το καταφύγιό μου στο Κατάρ, κάτι που δεν είχα αγκαλιάσει ποτέ πριν σε τέτοιο βαθμό. Είναι η πρώτη φορά που βρίσκω τόση μεγάλη χαρά στην ιδέα να περάσω ατελείωτες ώρες μόνη σε ένα διαμέρισμα ξενοδοχείου. Εδώ γίνομαι ευάλωτη—όπως τα λουλούδια που αγοράζω κάθε εβδομάδα για να ομορφύνω το σπίτι μου, μια νέα συνήθεια που ανέπτυξα στη Ντόχα και η οποία αποδείχθηκε ευλογία. Το “εβδομαδιαίο λουλούδι” είναι το σημείο αναφοράς της προσωπικής μου διεξόδου, σαν να με βοηθά να συντονίζομαι με τον χτύπο της καρδιάς και να παραμείνω πιστή στον εαυτό μου. Τα χρώματα, τα αρώματα και οι υφές θρέφουν τόσο το πνεύμα όσο και το σώμα. Το “εβδομαδιαίο λουλούδι” είναι η μόνιμη συντροφιά μου· και η αλληλεπίδρασή με τη φωτογραφία προκύπτει με έναν τρόπο φυσικό.
Στο αυτοαναφορικό έργο “A Pair of Brand New Eyes, μέσα από αυτοσχεδιασμούς και εικόνες του οικείου χρόνου μου στο διαμέρισμα, καθώς και σκηνές δρόμου στο Κατάρ, απεικονίζω δύο κόσμους σε απόσταση και ταυτόχρονα δύο κόσμους που επιθυμούν να συνδεθούν. Ο αστικός πολιτισμός της Ντόχα, το απέραντο της ερήμου και της θάλασσας αντίστοιχα — και τα δύο φυσικά στοιχεία της χώρας — λειτουργούν σαν καθρέφτες που εμπνέουν ένα ταξίδι αυτογνωσίας. Στον τόπο αυτό, ενάντια σε όλες τις πιθανότητες, είδα το σπίτι μέσα μου. Και κάτι ακόμα: το ταξίδι αυτό ίσως να ηχεί σε άλλες γυναίκες της περιοχής, με κοινές εμπειρίες που παραμένουν στη σιωπή, αλλά συνάμα βαθιά κατανοητές.

Η Όλγα Στεφάτου είναι φωτογράφος και σύμβουλος φωτογραφίας με δημιουργική βάση το εργαστήριο της στην Αθήνα, το atelier délos. Έχει παρουσιάσει έργα της στο Aga Khan Museum (CA), Doha Fire Station Art Space (QA), Los Angeles Month of Photography, Head On (AU), Les Boutographies (FR), Gallery Negpos (FR), Photon Gallery (SI), Synthesis Gallery (BG), Benaki Museum (GR), MOMus-Photo Biennale Θεσσαλονίκης (GR) και Athens Photo Festival (GR) μεταξύ άλλων.
Έχει εμπειρία στη φωτοδημοσιογραφία, έχοντας συνεργαστεί με διεθνή μέσα ενημέρωσης (Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, The Economist, NBC News, Vanity Fair).
Το 2021 επιλέχθηκε από τον οίκο Dior μαζί με εννιά ακόμη Ελληνίδες φωτογράφους να φωτογραφίσει τη συλλογή Cruise 2022.
Το 2015 κατέγραψε ως μέλος του πληρώματος την πρωτοποριακή αποστολή Solar Impulse – O πρώτος γύρος του κόσμου με αεροσκάφος ηλιακής ενέργειας.
Συνεργάζεται με την Περιφέρεια Θεσσαλίας ως σύμβουλος για το νέο φωτογραφικό διαγωνισμό Tloupas Path.
Έχει συνεργαστεί με τον οργανισμό Qatar Museums: το 2023 για το φεστιβάλ φωτογραφίας Tasweer και από το 2018 έως το 2020 για τη φωτογραφική συλλογή.
Ήταν επιμελήτρια του εικαστικού προγράμματος και των παράλληλων δράσεων του Saristra Festival στην Κεφαλονιά από το 2014 εως το 2022. Ενώ το 2021, συν ίδρυσε τη διεθνή πλατφόρμα Print For Crisis με σκοπό τη συγκέντρωση χρημάτων για την υποστήριξη δημοσιογράφων, φωτογράφων και εικαστικών της Μιανμάρ.
Σπούδασε φωτογραφία στο Πανεπιστήμιο Δυτικής Αττικής, και το 2012 πήρε το μεταπτυχιακό της στη «Δημοσιογραφία Πολυμέσων», από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Μπόλτον, με έδρα το Πεκίνο της Κίνας.

A Pair of Brand New Eyes” is an internal monologue, an intimate series that explores femininity and its profound connection to nature within the landscape of Qatar.
The pulse of public life offers a sense of peace and protection, yet it carries the burden of a dry, silent coexistence. A set of cultural and geopolitical norms is deeply ingrained in society; a society that is constantly renewed, primarily with a male population. Furthermore, public life shifts entirely indoors for half of the year due to high temperatures. In such conditions, the self is tested, confronted with its multiple facets— both strong and weak, bright and dark. The notion of social distancing and emotional detachment can lead to the suppression of the true self, consequently to a form of solitude or loneliness.
The private space has become my sanctuary in Qatar, a refuge I have never before embraced to such an extent. This is the first time I have found excitement in the idea of spending countless hours alone in a hotel apartment. It is here that I become vulnerable—like the flowers I buy every week to make my home prettier, a new habit I developed in Doha and one that has proven to be a blessing. The “weekly flower” is the reference point of my personal way out, as if it helps me attune to my own heartbeat and stay true to myself. The colors, fragrances, and textures nourish both the spirit and the body. The “weekly flower” is my constant companion; its interplay with photography arises naturally.
In the self-referential work A Pair of Brand New Eyes, through indoor self-improvisations and still-life images of my intimate time in the apartment, as well as street scenes from Qatar, I attempt to visualize two worlds in distance and at the same time two worlds that long to connect. In the urban culture of Doha, the vastness of the desert and the sea—both natural elements of the country—act as mirrors, inspiring a journey of self-discovery. In this place, against all odds, I felt the home within myself. And there is something more: this journey may resonate with other women in the region with shared experiences that remain in silence yet are deeply understood.
Bio
Olga Stefatou is a photographer and photography consultant with a creative base at her studio in Athens, atelier délos. Stefatou has exhibited her work at Aga Khan Museum (CA), Doha Fire Station Art Space (QA), MOMus Photo Biennale Thessaloniki (GR), Benaki Museum (GR), Los Angeles Month of Photography, Head On (AU), Les Boutographies (FR), Gallery Negpos (FR), Photon Gallery (SI) and Synthesis Gallery (BG) and Athens Photo Festival (GR) among others.
She has an extensive experience in photojournalism, collaborating with international media (Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, The Economist, NBC News, Vanity Fair).
In 2021 she was selected to photograph the DIOR Cruise 2022 collection with nine other Greek female artists.
In 2015 she documented as a crewmember the pioneering Solar Impulse mission – the round of the world using only solar power.
She collaborates as a consultant with the Thessaly Region for the new photographic competition Tloupas Path.
She has worked with the Qatar Museums organization: in 2023 for the Tasweer Photography Festival, and from 2018 to 2020 for the photography collection.
She was the curator of the artistic program and parallel events of the Saristra Festival in Kefalonia from 2014 to 2022.
In 2021, she co-founded the international platform Print For Crisis to raise funds in support of journalists, photographers, and visual artists in Myanmar.
She studied photography at the University of West Attica, and in 2012 she earned her Master’s degree in Multimedia Journalism from the University of Bolton, UK, while being based in Beijing, China.
