The Workshop
We welcome eminent artists Vanessa Winship and George Georgiou at Void’s space in Athens this November for a workshop about photographic process. The artists will work in tandem with a small number of participants and will discuss their projects from their inception to their continued dedication. Participants are asked to bring work with them for a personal one to one session but the central premise is that all participants will create new work during the lab.
When we begin a work, whether research based or practical, it is a response or engagement with what we see and experience going on in the world or within our personal biographies. These two are not mutually exclusive and the best discoveries are often a blending of the two. When selecting a project basis, it is important to collate and describe, shoot and outline and sketch the information that will inform the work and to consider how best to inform and steer a personal vision towards success.
Vanessa and George will work with the participants to examine their day-to-day progress. They will encourage the participants to consider the local environment, engaging as fully and clearly as possible in order to bring back their best notes. The aim is not to make a finished product per se, nor is it to create the perfect pictures, rather to engage with the act of making visual notes and to begin to understand how this material can be used either simply as notes or to be drawn together through a process of editing and sequencing towards making a larger body of work.
ASX will be conducting interviews on site and will feature a body of work at the end of the laboratory by one student chosen by Void and ASX teams. Void will also be aiding in the production of a collective zine with the work produced during the workshop, for the participants to take away at the end of the workshop. The participants will be asked to be involved in the publishing process. ASX and Void will be directly involved in reviewing work and will be on site and working with Vanessa & George to bring the optimum workshop experience to each participant. This workshop features three key components that students will have access to-the artists Vanessa Winship & George Georgiou, the publisher Void and the American Suburb X platform.
For the last night of the workshop, as we usually do, we expect to have a public projection and presentation of the work. A public recorded conversation between Vanessa & George and Brad Feuerhelm will also happen. For obvious reasons, the public presentation is still to be confirmed, following the Greek regulations for public gathering at the time being.
Safety in 2020
This workshop will take into consideration the global moment that we are experiencing with Covid-19. Void and American Suburb X will be on hand to facilitate a safe environment and we will encourage meetings outdoors when feasible for the safety of all included. Our main concern during this moment is how best to effectuate a sincere learning environment under the duress of Covid-19. Masks indoors will be encouraged. There will also be an emphasis on distance and outdoor meetings. We will work closely with Vanessa and George to ensure a confident workshop in which health is considered at the forefront of our venture.
How to submit
To submit your work, send an email to talkto@void.photo with “Laboratory – Vanessa Winship & George Georgiou” as a subject with a PDF file (5 Mb max.) containing 10-15 images that best represent your body of work.
In the email, include a short C.V. and your reason for wanting to participate in the workshop.
Practical Information
The investment for the 6-day workshop will be: €650 for the early birds (up to 7 seats, first come, first serve), which is due by 10 OCT ‘20. Early bird applicants are expected to pay the full amount by no later than October 20th. Participants registering after this date will not receive the early bird discount and are expected to pay €750. Full payment for non-early bird applicants are expected to pay the full amount by no later than October 20th.
International participants are encouraged to arrive one day before the workshop begins. It will also be expected to make their own travel arrangements, insurance and find accommodation.
We can advise on finding the accommodation that best suits you. Important to note that most of the day time will be spent at Void.
All photographers must bring all necessary equipment, like cameras, laptops, memory stick, and whatever tools that apply to your creative process such as tripods, flash, etc.
To fit in the flow of the workshop’s shooting and review, this is a digital-encouraged course.
Each participant must bring a printed sample of their existing work. 10 to 15 printed photos, small format.
The workshop will be led in English.
On Travel
We are announcing this workshop with confidence that it will go forward. We have cancelled a number of workshops at the beginning of the year when the situation with Covid-19 was less clear. At this particular moment, things are still unclear, but we feel as though it is possible to move forward. At a certain point, it is all one can do. That being said, we highly recommend that if you are travelling from abroad that you take certain precautions with flights and accommodations. It would be remiss of us not to mention that having insurance on both would be forward-thinking. It would also be advantageous to consider best how to travel and to consider that there may be extraneous costs such as border testing. At present, this is not the case, but with everything 2020, things can change at any moment and you may find yourself in need of a test to travel. So far, Greece has not quarantined flights from EU countries. America seems to have special privileges to travel, but we cannot say whether or not this workshop would fit those perimeters. It will be of the utmost importance that each participant familiarizes themselves with international travel procedures.
In the event that the workshop must be cancelled, we have opportunities in place for spring 2021 that will provide a similar possibility. We will let participants know about this in the event of cancellation. For the moment, you should think of this as still first come first serve and that at this moment, we are moving forward with this workshop. The confirmation of the workshop will be announced to you no prior than October 18th. Until then, no payments are required. Once you have been accepted, applicants are expected to pay the full amount by no later than October 20th to book their seats.

Void reserves the right to cancel the workshop due to insufficient participants or reasons beyond our control. Taking in consideration the times we are living through, applicants are not required to deposit any installments until we have a clear understanding of restrictions that may occur during November.
