Το “The Truth is in the Soil” της Ιωάννας Σακελλαράκη θα δημοσιευθεί σύντομα σε φωτογραφικό βιβλίο από τον εκδοτικό οίκο GOST Books, με έδρα το Λονδίνο.
Η ίδια δηλώνει ότι “Η υλοποίηση αυτού του έργου σε βιβλίο αποτελεί ένας από τους μακροχρόνιους στόχους της φωτογραφικής μου δουλειάς και το επιθυμητό αποτέλεσμα της προσωπικής και συναισθηματικής μου επένδυσης σε αυτό το έργο.”
Το βιβλίο έχει σχεδιαστεί από τον διάσημο σχεδιαστή Stu Smith.
Έχει ήδη ξεκινήσει διαδικασία εκτέλεσης μιας καμπάνιας στην πλατφόρμα του Kickstarter, μέσω της οποίας προπωλούνται υπογεγραμμένα αντίγραφα του βιβλίου, μια σειρά limited edition εκτυπώσεων καθώς και μια ειδική έκδοση του φωτογραφικού βιβλίου, που με την αγορά τους μπορεί κάποιος να συνεισφέρει στο συνολικό κόστος παραγωγής του βιβλίου.

Ιστορία
‘Ο μπαμπάς είναι νεκρός, γύρνα σπίτι’.
Έτσι μου ανακοίνωσε η αδερφή μου το θάνατο του πατέρα μου από το τηλέφωνο.
Η επιστροφή μου στην πατρίδα μου την Ελλάδα σηματοδότησε την αναχώρηση για ένα ταξίδι κατανόησης του θανάτου μέσω της οικογένειας, της θρησκείας, της μυθολογίας και του εαυτού.
Η δική μου διαδικασία πένθους έγινε ο φακός μέσω του οποίου ερεύνησα το συλλογικό πένθος στην ελληνική κοινωνία, τη διασταύρωση των προγονικών τελετουργιών, το ιδιωτικό τραύμα και το πέρασμα του χρόνου. Περαιτέρω εμπνευσμένο από τις τελευταίες κοινότητες μοιρολογιστρών στη χερσόνησο της Μάνης, ως πρεσβυτέρων μιας παράδοσης που πεθαίνει, το έργο ενσωματώνει ένα νέο είδος υποκειμενικότητας, οικειότητας και κριτικής, εξερευνώντας τις τελετουργίες των νεκροθαλάμων, ως τρόπο προσαρμογής των ανθρώπων στο θάνατο.
Πέντε χρόνια αργότερα, το “The Truth is in the Soil”, αναλογίζεται πώς η προσωπική μου ιστορία έχει μετατραπεί σε μια συλλογική αφήγηση της απώλειας, με στόχο να συμβάλει στη συλλογή ανθρώπινων ιστοριών στην αγωνία να κατανοήσουν. Για μένα, αυτές οι εικόνες λειτουργούν ως οχήματα για το πένθος, τα χαμένα ιδανικά ζωτικότητας, την ευημερία και του ανήκειν, προσπαθώντας να πουν κάτι περισσότερο από το ίδιο τους το θέμα, δημιουργώντας ένα χώρο όπου ο θάνατος μπορεί να υπάρχει.
Ο θάνατος φέρνει μαζί του μια αναπόφευκτη ρήξη στις πεποιθήσεις, τους ρόλους και την ταυτότητα για όσους τον συναντούν. Πώς μπορεί κάποιος να αντιμετωπίσει την απώλεια;

Story
‘Dad is dead, come back home.’
This is how my sister announced the death of my father to me over the phone.
My return to my homeland Greece marked the departure on a journey of understanding death through family, religion, mythology and the self.
My own grieving process became the lens through which I investigated the collective mourning in Greek society, the intersection of ancestral rituals, private trauma and the passage of time. Further inspired by the last communities of mourners on the Mani Peninsula of Greece as the doyennes of a dying tradition, the work incorporates a new kind of subjectivity, intimacy, and criticism, exploring mortuary rituals as a way of humans adapting to death.
Five years later, The Truth is in the Soil, reflects on how my personal story has transformed into a collective narrative of loss aiming at contributing to the collection of tales of human struggle for meaning. To me, these images work as vehicles for mourning perished ideals of vitality, prosperity and belonging, attempting to tell something further than their subjects by creating a space where death can exist.
Death brings with it an inevitable rupture in beliefs, roles and identity for those who encounter it. How can one deal with loss?
In the wake of witnessing loss globally within our cultures and civilizations, I want to stimulate the viewer to rethink mortality through this imagined path of departure onto a new landscape.
Publishing this book marks the end of a journey for me and the transition into a new phase. I can only hope for it to become a source of empathy, strength and inspiration for the ones who will acquire it.

For the past five years, the project has received significant recognition. It was a winner of the LensCulture Art Photography Awards (2021) and was awarded the title of the Sony World Photo Awards – Student Photographer of the Year (2020). In 2018, it won The Royal Photographic Society Bursary Award, followed by The Reminders Photography Stronghold Grant in Tokyo (2019) and the International Photography Grant Creative Prize (2020). It has been nominated for the Inge Morath Award by Magnum Foundation (2019) and has been exhibited internationally with a recent solo show at the European Month of Photography in Berlin.
What the money raised will go towards
The support I receive through this campaign will be entirely dedicated to the production of the book.
The book has been designed in collaboration with renowned book designer Stu Smith and will be published by GOST Books.
It will be a hardback, clothbound book, 230 x 290mm in portrait format and printed both colour and duotone at EBS in Italy.
The special editions will be presented in a handmade clothbound slipcase.
Accompanying the images will be a series of fictocritical essays written as part of my research and engagement with critical theory, philosophical poetics and aesthetics throughout this project.
Giving this work a permanent existence by realising it into a book has been one of the long-standing objectives of my practice and the wishful outcome of my personal and emotional investment into this project. However, publishing a photography book is increasingly challenging due to the high costs of design, printing and distribution. As a young, self-funded photographer, I will be putting part of my savings into the production but I am not able to cover all the costs. I therefore count on your support for bringing this project into the world. I am forever grateful for helping me make this real.
