How to talk about the past and the present of art in Athens?
A participatory workshop around an ethnographic film on a work in documenta 14 by anthropologists Herbert Ploegman and Grigoris Gkougkousis.

In the summer of 2017, Herbert Ploegman and Grigoris Gkougkousis made an ethnographic film about a participatory artwork in the Athenian public space: a tent in Plateia Kotzia where meals were served daily.
Now, in Zoetrope, their film turns into a collective exploration of what art means in Athens.
This workshop is an invitation to collectively think about the arts in Athens in the current moment and the recent past. It aims to create a space for collectively outlining aspects of this moment and a discussion of their significance. Amongst these may be the disappearance of that artwork from the Athenian public space, and the appearance of art spaces in the city. Another may be the difficulties that exist around screening the film and the repercussions for the workshop and the debate at large.
This workshop links art initiatives with anthropological research on art in Athens. It originates in Herbert’s PhD project on artist-run spaces and their significance in Athens. The workshop aims to make room for questioning the ways we talk, think, and learn about art practices in Athens.

Ένα συμμετοχικό σεμινάριο γύρω από μια εθνογραφική ταινία για ένα έργο στην Documenta 14, από τους ανθρωπολόγους Herbert Ploegman και Γρηγόρη Γκουγκούση. –
Το καλοκαίρι του 2017, ο Herbert Ploegman και ο Γρηγόρης Γκουγκούσης έκαναν μια εθνογραφική ταινία για ένα συμμετοχικό έργο στον αθηναϊκό δημόσιο χώρο: μια σκηνή στην Πλατεία Κοτζιά, όπου προσφέρονται γεύματα καθημερινά.
Τώρα, στο Zoetrope, η ταινία τους μετατρέπεται σε μια συλλογική εξερεύνηση του τι σημαίνει τέχνη στην Αθήνα.
Αυτό το workshop αποτελεί πρόσκληση για συλλογική σκέψη για τις τέχνες της Αθήνας στην παρούσα στιγμή και το πρόσφατο παρελθόν. Σκοπός του είναι να δημιουργήσει ένα χώρο για συλλογική περιγραφή των πτυχών αυτής της στιγμής και μια συζήτηση για τη σημασία τους. Μεταξύ αυτών μπορεί να είναι η εξαφάνιση αυτού του έργου από τον αθηναϊκό δημόσιο χώρο και η εμφάνιση χώρων τέχνης στην πόλη. Άλλες μπορεί να είναι οι δυσκολίες που υπάρχουν σχετικά με την προβολή της ταινίας και τις επιπτώσεις για το εργαστήριο και τη συζήτηση γενικότερα.
Το workshop συνδέει τις πρωτοβουλίες τέχνης με την ανθρωπολογική έρευνα στην τέχνη στην Αθήνα. Προέρχεται από το διδακτορικό πρόγραμμα του Herbert σχετικά με τους χώρους καλλιτεχνών και τη σημασία τους στην Αθήνα. Στοχεύει να δημιουργήσει χώρο για την αμφισβήτηση των τρόπων που μιλάμε, σκεφτόμαστε και μαθαίνουμε για τις μορφές τέχνης στην Αθήνα. –
