A 5-DAY WORKSHOP IN ATHENS WITH MAX PINCKERS + ASX & VOID’S TEAM
THE WORKSHOP
Max Pinckers is one of documentary photography’s most promising young talents. He is one of the founding members of the School of Speculative Documentary; a research group founded at KASK (University), in Ghent, Belgium. The School of Speculative Documentary is re-examining how we interpret the roles of truth, document and reality in the context of interdisciplinary methodologies and practices. It seeks to illuminate and challenge how we relate to information that we previously considered as concrete in the post-truth economy.

Pinckers, in his role as founding partner of the school considers the role of documentary practice as it relates to photography and collaboration. He is interested in examining how voice, authorship and intent pave the way for a re-interpretation of political and social theater. In challenging how we perceive documents by interweaving multiple narratives and points of view, Pinckers promotes a new way of looking and of interpreting photography. Pinckers wants us to discuss, dissect and disseminate images of documentary value with an emphasis on questioning validity and use.

In spring of 2020, Void and American Suburb X welcome Pinckers to Athens to lead a workshop to discuss the role of the speculative document in our current times and how he has used this methodology to search for answers to the principal doubt expressed in photography-notably, what is real? What is fake? and what is the intent of the photograph and what are the limits of its ability to be manipulated? and how can we coerce its medium-specificity towards a more inclusive and cogent distribution of potential meaning?

Max Pinckers (b.1988, BE) is an artist based in Brussels, Belgium. His oeuvre explores visual strategies in documentary photography. Not believing in the possibility of sheer objectivity or neutrality, Pinckers advocates a manifest subjective approach, which is made visible through the explicit use of theatrical lighting, stage directions or extras. Extensive research and diligent technical preparation are combined with improvisation to obtain lively, unexpected, critical, simultaneously poetic and documentary images. His work takes shape as self-published artist books and exhibition installations such as The Fourth Wall (2012), Will They Sing Like Raindrops or Leave Me Thirsty (2014), and Margins of Excess (2018). Pinckers is currently a doctoral researcher and lecturer in the arts at the School of Arts / KASK, Ghent and has received multiple international awards, such as the Edward Steichen Award Luxembourg 2015 and the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2018. In 2015 he founded the independent publishing house Lyre Press.
