English Version

Nikos Basias – The Holy Drop
A photographic exploration of Cretan distillation, memory, and the ritual of the rakokazano.

For me, the traditional rakokazana (the Cretan distillation still) are far more than places where tsikoudia is produced. They are living social and cultural spaces—places where work, tradition, hospitality, celebration, and collective memory come together.
Through this photographic body of work, I seek to capture the essence of a tradition that continues to live through the people who practice it. My images focus on gestures and faces, on fire and steam, on the rhythm of the work, and on the dramatic interplay of light and shadow. The chiaroscuro creates a theatrical intensity that echoes the almost ritualistic atmosphere of the distillation process.
I want the viewer to experience more than the image itself—to sense the warmth, generosity, and energy of Crete, as if sitting alongside us at the same table.
To move beyond photography as a purely visual experience, I have brought the images into dialogue with two other essential elements of Cretan culture: mantinades, the island’s traditional folk verses, and taste. The mantinades accompanying the photographs speak of tsikoudia, companionship, love, and life. They become the voice of a world that continues to resist disappearance.
The tasting of tsikoudia that accompanies the exhibition extends this photographic narrative into the realm of the senses. Here, photography is no longer confined to the wall: it acquires taste and aroma. The images come alive in the glass, creating an immersive experience that invites the visitor to encounter the ritual of the Cretan rakokazano not only through the eyes, but through memory, scent, taste, and emotion.
In a time of constant change, the rakokazana remind us that tradition is not a relic preserved from the past. It is a living practice—one that survives, evolves, and is renewed through the people who continue to experience and pass it on.
