Στράτος Μαραγκός – The Magic Mountain (Το Μαγικό Βουνό)
Ζώντας στην Αθήνα, πηγαίνω συχνά για πεζοπορία στο κοντινό βουνό, την Πάρνηθα. Εκεί περπατώ άσκοπα, ακολουθώντας συνεχώς διαφορετικά μονοπάτια. Η εσωτερική μου πυξίδα πάλλεται και με καθοδηγεί. Για μένα, δεν υπάρχει κανείς και τίποτα σε μεγάλη απόσταση. Είμαι ολομόναχος μέσα στον κόσμο, ένα πρωτόγονο ον που περιπλανιέται ανάμεσα στα ψηλά δέντρα και χάνεται στο αρχέγονο τοπίο.
Η σιωπή του δάσους προκαλεί δονήσεις. Μια άβυσσος ανοίγεται μπροστά μου. Τα ίχνη της καταστροφής είναι παντού γύρω μου. Παρόν, παρελθόν και μέλλον συνυπάρχουν. Θα μπορούσα να περιπλανιέμαι έτσι ατέλειωτα, διευρύνοντας τα όρια της ύπαρξής μου. Επιστρέφω ξανά σε γνώριμα μέρη, προσπαθώντας μάταια να σταματήσω τον χρόνο, όμως εκείνος μου αντιστέκεται. Η φύση αλλάζει και ανασχηματίζεται διαρκώς, ενώ στο βάθος το μεγάλο τοπίο, οι ορεινοί όγκοι, παραμένουν ανεπηρέαστοι.
Θέλω να μένω εκεί ακόμη κι όταν υπάρχει ο κίνδυνος να χαθώ στο σκοτάδι, στην ομίχλη ή μέσα σε μια χιονοθύελλα. Το λευκό τοπίο, η σιωπή και ο παγετός ασκούν πάνω μου μια καταλυτική επίδραση. Όπως ο Χανς Κάστορπ, ο ήρωας από Το Μαγικό Βουνό του Τόμας Μαν, σχεδόν υπνωτισμένος, αφήνω τα πάντα πίσω μου καθώς προχωρώ βαθύτερα μέσα στη χιονοθύελλα, χάνοντας τον προσανατολισμό μου. Ένα κομμάτι μου επιθυμεί να παραδοθεί στη λυτρωτική νάρκωση της Φύσης. Όμως ο χτύπος της καρδιάς μου με επαναφέρει.
Bio
Ο Στράτος Μαραγκός (γεν. 1972, Μόναχο) είναι Έλληνας φωτογράφος με έδρα την Αθήνα. Ολοκλήρωσε το Μεταπτυχιακό Πρόγραμμα στη Φωτογραφία «Φωτογραφία: Έρευνα και Μεθοδολογία» στο Πανεπιστήμιο Δυτικής Αττικής, αποφοιτώντας το 2025. Η μεταπτυχιακή του διατριβή ερευνά τα φωτογραφικά αρχεία του Ελληνικού Εμφυλίου Πολέμου (1946–1949) και συνοδεύεται από το καλλιτεχνικό έργο From the Front: Greek Civil War Battlefields, μια σειρά από τοπία Polaroid πεδίων μαχών του Εμφυλίου.
Ξεκίνησε τη φωτογραφία στην Stereosis στη Θεσσαλονίκη (2008–2010) και αργότερα παρακολούθησε μαθήματα στη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών στην Αθήνα (2016–2018). Έχει λάβει μέρος σε εργαστήρια με τους Alec Soth, Anders Petersen, JH Engström, Moritz Neumüller και Στράτο Καλαφάτη, καθώς και στα σεμινάρια διάρκειας έξι εβδομάδων του Depression Era “New Documents” και “Nightstalkers”.
Το έργο του Minus Two (-2) εκτέθηκε στο Φιλανδικό Μουσείο Φωτογραφίας στο Ελσίνκι (Belonging to the History, Ιούνιος–Σεπτέμβριος 2019), παρουσιάστηκε στο Φεστιβάλ της Φωτομετρίας στα Ιωάννινα (Ιούνιος 2019) και σε ατομική έκθεση στην Nitra Gallery στην Αθήνα (Οκτώβριος–Νοέμβριος 2019). Το έργο του περιλαμβάνεται στην έκδοση Transeurope Photo Platform (2019) και στον συλλογικό τόμο Depression Era: A Collective Lens in the Age of Crisis (2025). Ένα μέρος του έργου του Lucid Dream παρουσιάστηκε στη Photobiennale Thessaloniki (2014). Το πρώτο φωτογραφικό του λεύκωμα με τίτλο The Magic Mountain, κυκλοφορεί σύντομα.

Stratos Maragos – The Magic Mountain
Living in Athens, I often go hiking in the nearby mountain, Parnitha. There I walk aimlessly on different paths. My internal compass pulses and directs me. For me, there is no one and nothing for miles. I am all alone in the world, a primitive being wandering among tall trees and getting lost in the primeval landscape.
The silence of the forest causes vibrations. An abyss opens before me. The traces of destruction are all around. Present, past, future coexist. I could roam like this endlessly, expanding the boundaries of my existence. I keep coming back to familiar places, trying in vain to stop the time, but it resists me. Nature is constantly changing and reforming, while in the background, the great landscape, the mountain masses remain unaffected.
I want to stay there even when there is a risk of getting lost in the dark, in the fog, or in a blizzard. Τhe white landscape, the silence, and the frost have a catalytic effect on me. Like Hans Castorp, the hero from Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain, almost hypnotized, I leave everything behind as I delve deeper and deeper into a snowstorm, in the process of getting lost. Part of me wishes to surrender to the merciful narcosis of Nature. But my heartbeat brings me back.
Bio
Stratos Maragos (b. 1972, Munich) is a Greek photographer based in Athens. He holds an MA in Photography (Postgraduate Program “Photography: Research and Methodology”) from the University of West Attica, graduating in 2025. His MA thesis examines the photographic archives of the Greek Civil War (1946–1949) and is accompanied by the artistic project From the Front: Greek Civil War Battlefields, a series of Polaroid landscapes made at former battle sites.
He began his practice at Stereosis Photo School in Thessaloniki (2008–2010) and later attended classes at the Athens School of Fine Arts (2016–2018). He has attended workshops with Alec Soth, Anders Petersen, JH Engström, Moritz Neumüller and Stratos Kalafatis, as well as Depression Era’s six-week seminars “New Documents” and “Nightstalkers”.
His project Minus Two (-2) was exhibited at the Finnish Museum of Photography, Helsinki (Belonging to the History, Jun–Sep 2019), presented at Photometry Festival, Ioannina (Jun 2019), and shown in a solo exhibition at Nitra Gallery, Athens (Oct–Nov 2019). His work appears in the Transeurope Photo Platform publication (2019) and in Depression Era: A Collective Lens in the Age of Crisis (2025). Part of his project Lucid Dream was shown at Photobiennale Thessaloniki (2014). His first photobook, The Magic Mountain, is forthcoming.
