Σοφία Τολίκα – Mundus
Το Mundus (η λατινική λέξη για τον Κόσμο) διερευνά τη σχέση μεταξύ του υπόγειου κόσμου της Γης και του Διαστήματος, μέσα από εικόνες που προέρχονται από την καταβύθιση στο εσωτερικό της, κατά τη διαδικασία κατασκευής ενός υπόγειου τεχνικού έργου. Καλεί τον θεατή σε ένα ταξίδι ανάμεσα σε χώρους και υλικά, ενδείξεις ζωής και προσωπικά αντικείμενα αποκαλύπτοντάς του σταδιακά έναν συνεχώς μεταβαλλόμενο, αθέατο κόσμο, ο οποίος διαμορφώνεται μέσα από εκρήξεις και καταστροφές, μεταμορφώσεις και μετασχηματισμούς, ωθήσεις και ανακατασκευές.
Στο Mundus επιχειρείται να διαφανεί ότι ο μικρόκοσμός μας, η ύλη από την οποία είναι φτιαγμένα τα πάντα γύρω μας, αποτελεί τελικά ένα απειροελάχιστο κομμάτι της μεγαλύτερης εικόνας, του μακρόκοσμου του Σύμπαντος. Οι συνειρμοί δημιουργούνται κυρίως μέσω των οπτικών αναφορών που έχουμε οι περισσότεροι όταν φέρνουμε στο μυαλό μας εικόνες από το Διάστημα, τις διαστημικές αποστολές, τα σχέδια αστρονομίας, αλλά και μέσω των συνεχών εναλλαγών στην κλίμακα και στη γωνία θέασης των εικόνων.
Το Mundus αναδεικνύει την ομορφιά της εξερεύνησης και το μυστήριο της δημιουργίας συνδυάζοντας την τέχνη με την επιστήμη, τη φαντασία με την πραγματικότητα και το γήινο στοιχείο με το αέρινο, μέσα από μια οπτική διεργασία που δανείζεται στοιχεία από τους τομείς της γεωλογίας, της μηχανικής, της αστρονομίας, των μαθηματικών και των τεχνών.
Bio
Η Σοφία Τολίκα (γεν. Θεσσαλονίκη) είναι φωτογράφος και πολιτικός μηχανικός.
Η δημιουργική της πρακτική περιλαμβάνει φωτογραφία, φωτογραφικά βιβλία, βίντεο και ηχογραφήσεις πεδίου. Τα θέματά της συχνά προκύπτουν μέσα από την παρατήρηση, την επιστημονική έρευνα, την περιπλάνηση, την παύση και τον αναστοχασμό. Μέσα από τις φωτογραφίες της επιχειρεί να αποδώσει την ατμόσφαιρα του κόσμου της, αλλά και να αποκαλύψει όψεις του που συνήθως μένουν αθέατες ή πράγματα που βιώνουμε, αλλά προσπερνάμε στην καθημερινότητα.
Το έργο της έχει παρουσιαστεί σε ατομικές και ομαδικές εκθέσεις και φεστιβάλ βιβλίου στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό, ενώ μέρος του ανήκει στις συλλογές του MOMus – Μουσείου Φωτογραφίας Θεσσαλονίκης, του MOMus – Μουσείου Σύγχρονης Τέχνης Θεσσαλονίκης, του Καναδικού Κέντρου Αρχιτεκτονικής, καθώς και σε άλλες βιβλιοθήκες πανεπιστημιακών ιδρυμάτων της Ελλάδας και του εξωτερικού.
Ζει και εργάζεται στη Θεσσαλονίκη.

Sophia Tolika – Mundus
Mundus (the latin word for World) explores the relationship between the subterranean world of Earth and that of the Universe through pictures that come from Earth’s interior during the process of the construction of an underground technical work. It invites the viewer to a trip among places and materials, signs of life and personal items revealing gradually the varying, invisible world of explosions and destructions, metamorphosis and transformations, thrusts and reconstructions.
Mundus is hinting at the premise that our microcosm and the stuff that makes everything around us, is ultimately but a miniscule part of the bigger picture that is the macrocosm of the Universe. Connotations are evoked primarily from visual references to outer space, space missions and astronomical drawings, as well as through the alternating scale and angle of view of the pictures. Explosions, dark matter, creation, similarities between materials, the emergence of life and the ever-expanding space are but a few of the shared features found in either of these distant, seemingly incomparable fields.
Mundus emphasizes the beauty of exploration and the mystery of creation intertwining the artistic and the scientific, the imaginary and the real, the earthy and the aerial through a visual practice that is based on the fields of geology, engineering, astronomy and the arts.
Bio
Sophia Tolika (b. Thessaloniki) is a photographer and civil engineer.
Her creative practice spans photography, photobooks, video, and field recordings. Her subjects often emerge through observation, scientific research, walking, pausing, and reflecting. Through her photographs, she seeks to convey the atmosphere of her world while also revealing aspects that often remain unseen, as well as experiences we live but tend to overlook in everyday life. Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions, as well as in photobook festivals in Greece and abroad. Part of it belongs to the collections of MOMus – Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, MOMus – Museum of Contemporary Art, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, as well as the libraries of greek and other international academic institutions.
She lives and works in Thessaloniki.
