Οι φωτογραφίες που επέλεξα ανήκουν σε ένα project σε εξέλιξη με προσωρινό τίτλο «Intimate Encounters”. Πρόσωπα οικεία αλλά και άγνωστα καθώς και χώροι που η ανθρώπινη παρουσία είναι υπαινικτική ή/και καμουφλαρισμένη προσεγγίζονται μέσω αναμνήσεων, συναισθημάτων και της εσωτερικής ματιάς, της ενόρασης.

Οι άδειες καρέκλες μετατρέπουν το βραδινό τοπίο σε σκηνικό θεάτρου. Λίγο πριν την αρχή ή μετά το τέλος μιας παράστασης με άγνωστη ταυτότητα.

Η Οία Φέτση γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα και σπούδασε Οικονομικά στην Αθήνα και το Παρίσι. Εργάστηκε ως οικονομολόγος στον τραπεζικό τομέα. Ασχολείται με τη φωτογραφία από το 2018, παρακολουθώντας μαθήματα και σεμινάρια. Έχει λάβει μέρος σε ομαδικές εκθέσεις. Οι φωτογραφίες που παρουσιάζονται εδώ αποτελούν μέρος μιας τρέχουσας ενότητας εργασίας με την επιμέλεια και καθοδήγηση του φωτογράφου Λουκά Βασιλικού. Είναι μέλος της φωτογραφικής ομάδας BLINK.

Η φωτογραφία είναι για μένα μια μοναχική κυρίως ενασχόληση. Είναι μια εσωτερική ανάγκη, κάποιες φορές συνειδητή και κάποιες όχι,  επηρεασμένη από τις προσωπικές μας μνήμες και βιώματα.

Παρόλα αυτά, μόνο όταν μοιράζεται παίρνει ζωή. Μετά το μοναχικό στάδιο της δημιουργίας μιας εικόνας, έρχεται το μοίρασμα με τον θεατή. Η γοητεία είναι όταν ο θεατής καλείται να τοποθετήσει τις δικές του αναμνήσεις μέσα σε αυτό ή να δημιουργήσει εντελώς δική του αφήγηση.

 Από την σειρά “(No) stories to be told”. Η σειρά αφορά σε ένα εσωτερικό διάλογο με το παρελθόν μου, ένα ταξίδι από το σήμερα στο χτες. Πρωταγωνιστές  εγώ, η οικογένεια μου, συγγενείς και φίλοι. Οι ρόλοι και οι ιστορίες τους που ξέρουμε αλλά και αυτές που δεν θα ειπωθούν ποτέ.

Covid19 και καραντίνα. Μια πρωτόγνωρη κατάσταση για όλους μας. Η μόνη διέξοδος –καλλιτεχνική και μη- το μπαλκόνι μας και το καθημερινό περπάτημα. Όμως σε κάθε κρίση υπάρχει μια ευκαιρία! 

Κατά την διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου ανακάλυψα την γοητεία της νυκτερινής φωτογραφίας όπου ακόμη και τα πιο απλά πράγματα αποκτούν άλλο νόημα και άλλη ομορφιά.

–Καμιά μορφή της φύσης δεν είναι κατώτερο από την τέχνη, αφού οι τέχνες απλά μιμούνται τη φύση.

Όταν αντίκρισα το συγκεκριμένο τοπίο, μου φάνηκε σαν ζωγραφικός πίνακας οπότε μου ήταν αδύνατο να μην το απαθανατίσω. Το φυσικό περιβάλλον είναι αυτοσυντηρούμενο και αυτάρκες. Γνωρίζοντας από άλλη ενασχόλησή μου ότι στην φύση ακόμη και τα νεκρά δέντρα ή τα ξεραμένα φύλλα παίζουν τον ρόλο τους στο οικοσύστημα, για μένα τα πάντα σε αυτή τη φωτογραφία είναι σε αρμονία.

Πολλά χρόνια πριν στο παλιό λιμάνι της Θεσσαλονίκης πλαισιωμένο με ομίχλη. Ένας άνθρωπος επικοινωνεί – λεκτικά ή όχι δεν ξέρω-  με τον σκύλο του. Για μένα, το τοπίο είναι πλήρως εναρμονισμένο με την «σύνδεση» αυτών των δύο. Είναι μια μαγική στιγμή. Από τις πρώτες μου φωτογραφίες, τραβηγμένη με κινητό τηλέφωνο.

Οι φωτογραφίες του Todd Hido είναι μοναδικές και γεμάτες ενέργεια έστω κι αν δεν διαδραματίζεται κάτι στο προσκήνιο. Στα τοπία του αλλά και στα άδεια σπίτια ενώ δεν υπάρχει καμία ανθρώπινη φιγούρα, είναι γεμάτα από την ανθρώπινη παρουσία. Αισθάνομαι ότι μου είναι οικεία και ταυτόχρονα άγνωστα.

Όπως λέει και ο ίδιος «Νομίζω ότι οι άνθρωποι που συνδέονται πραγματικά με τη δουλειά μου βλέπουν κάτι από τον εαυτό τους σε αυτό, δεν  βλέπουν εμένα απαραίτητα».

Παλλόμενη. Άλλοτε σαν προαίσθημα, πολλές φορές μυστηριώδης. Είναι δύσκολο να περιμένεις μια συγκεκριμένη αντίδραση από τη δουλειά του Todd Hido. Αν κάποιος τη χαρακτήριζε ατμοσφαιρική, θα κατάφερνε ίσως να επιτύχει μια σχετική προσέγγιση. Η δουλειά του Todd Hido είναι από νύχτα και είναι από βροχή και φθινοπωρινό χρώμα και ήσυχη μυθολογία. Μπορείς σχεδόν να νιώσεις τον δροσερό αέρα να μπαίνει στους πνεύμονες των λιγοστών πρωταγωνιστών που χαρακτηρίζουν τα πορτρέτα του. Ακόμα και το κραγιόν πάνω στα χείλη μιας γυναίκας και το υπαινικτικό ίχνος της σκιάς, που ρίχνει το σκελετωμένο κλαδί ενός ψηλού δέντρου πάνω στο παράθυρο ενός συγκεκριμένου μοντέλου αυτοκινήτου, μοιάζει με παλιά ταινία που νομίζεις ότι έχεις δει. Μπορείς να ακούσεις σχεδόν το αυτοκίνητο να ορμάει κινηματογραφικά από το χαλίκι στην άσφαλτο, τον ήχο από τις πέτρες που συνθλίβονται κάτω απ’ το λάστιχο να προστίθεται στην άγνωστη ενέργεια που χτίζεται ήσυχα ανάμεσα στις εικόνες. Η δουλειά του Hido δίνει στο θεατή την ευκαιρία να προβάλει, να ποθήσει και να σχεδιάσει το δικό του σάουντρακ για το φιλμ που ενεργοποιείται στο μυαλό του κοιτάζοντας τις φωτογραφίες του.

Η δουλειά του Hido είναι ευρύτατα αναγνωρισμένη. Έργα του περιλαμβάνονται σε μείζονες διεθνείς συλλογές, τόσο δημόσιες όσο και ιδιωτικές. Έχει δημοσιεύσει αρκετά βιβλία, μεταξύ των οποίων και το θρυλικό House Hunting το οποίο θα επανεκδοθεί αυτό το Νοέμβρη από τις εκδόσεις Nazraeli Press.

Το Void συνεργάζεται με το American Suburb X και δημιουργεί εργαστήρια υψηλών προδιαγραφών. Καθένα από αυτά προσφέρει στους συμμετέχοντες τη δυνατότητα να δουλέψουν στο πλευρό ενός καταξιωμένου καλλιτέχνη.

Το Void θα είναι ανοιχτό για το κοινό την τελευταία νύχτα του εργαστηρίου με τον Hido. Θα εκτεθούν τα έργα των συμμετεχόντων στο εργαστήριο και ο Todd θα συζητήσει και θα σχολιάσει τη δουλειά του μαζί με τον Brad Feuerhelm (συντάκτη του American Suburb X).

Todd Hido in Athens

Pulsing. Crepuscular. At times foreboding and often mysterious. It is difficult to exact a concrete response to the work of Todd Hido. If one were to suggest that it is atmospheric, they might approximate a relative correlation. Hido’s work is of the night and it is of rain and autumnal color and quiet mythology. You can almost feel the crisp air enter the lungs of the few protagonists that characterize his portrait work. Even the application of a woman’s lipstick and a suggestive trace shadow of a skeletal branch from an overhead tree on the window of a particular make of car suggest a lost film that you believe you have seen. You can almost hear the car as it careens cinematically from gravel to asphalt, the sound of rocks crushing beneath rubber adding to the unknown energy that quietly builds between frames. Hido’s work gives the viewer a chance to project, to desire and to design their own soundtrack to a mental film they activate by looking at his photographs.

Hido’s work is widely celebrated. His work is held in major international collections both public and private. He has issued a number of publications and his legendary book House Hunting will be re-published this November with Nazraeli Press.

Void and American Suburb X have partnered to create a series of high-profile workshops. Each Laboratory offers the chance for participants to work closely with an established artist.

Void will be hosting a public opening on the final night of Hido’s workshop. We will exhibit the work of the participants in the laboratory and Todd will be in conversation with Brad Feuerhelm (Editor American Suburb X) to discuss his work.

MARK POWER
Mark Power (b. Harpenden, UK, 1959) took up a camera soon after graduating with a degree in painting in 1981. He then worked in the editorial and charity markets for nearly ten years before accepting a teaching post at the University of Brighton in 1992, first as a senior Lecturer, then as the Professor of Photography, a position he held until he left teaching in 2017. His work in education coincided with a shift towards long-term, self initiated projects which now sit comfortably alongside a number of large-scale commissions in the industrial sector.

For many years his work has been seen in numerous galleries and museums across the world, and is in several important collections, both public and private, including the Arts Council of England, the British Council, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; the Pompidou Centre in Paris; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Pier 24 (San Francisco) and the Milwaukee Art Museum in America, and the Marrakech Museum of Photography and Visual Art in Morocco.

To date Power has published eleven books: The Shipping Forecast (1996), a poetic response to the esoteric language of daily maritime weather reports; Superstructure (2000), a documentation of the construction of London’s Millennium Dome; The Treasury Project (2002), about the restoration of a nineteenth-century historical monument: 26 Different Endings (2007), which depicts those landscapes unlucky enough to fall just off the edge of the London A-Z, a map which could be said to define the boundaries of the British capital; The Sound of Two Songs (2010), the culmination of his five year project set in contemporary Poland following her accession to the European Union; Mass (2013), an investigation into the power and wealth of the Polish Catholic church; Die Mauer ist Weg! (2014), about chance and choice when confronted, accidentally, with a major news event – in this case the fall of the Berlin Wall; Destroying the Laboratory for the Sake of the Experiment (2016), a collaboration with the poet Daniel Cockrill about pre-Brexit England; Icebreaker (2018) which documents two Finnish ships operating in the Bay of Bothnia; and Good Morning, America Volume One (2018) and Volume Two (2019). The latter project will eventually be published as a five-book set.

Mark Power joined Magnum Photos as a Nominee in 2002, and became a full Member in 2007. He lives in Brighton with his partner Jo, their children Chilli (b.1998) and Milligan (b.2002) and their dog Kodak.

THE WORKSHOP
Participants will be chosen to spend 4 days working closely with Mark at Void’s space in the heart of Athens. The participants will have access to Mark, ASX, and the Void team and the focus of the workshop will be to explore the cityscape of Athens, using its natural, historical and political climate to examine how photographic documents are produced and sequenced to reflect the city and its inhabitants. This is a loose concept and participants are encouraged to think obliquely, but should have a foreknowledge of Mark’s work.

The key elements of this workshop will be to explore Athens with Mark and produce work of a professional accord. The focus of which will be to consider the “Polis”-the collective elements of the city as seen through its landscape and people.

The workshop will focus on Mark’s methodology and his ability to work with Athens as a site. Participants will have access to his practice by their inclusion. The VOID side of the laboratory aspect will focus on zine production of students work, but there will also be lectures and interviews led by Brad Feuerhelm of ASX culminating in a public slideshow of the participants work and a conversation with Mark on the final day of the workshop. Participants will have one on one access with ASX, VOID, and Mark Power when reviewing their work in short sessions and throughout the course of the workshop. It will be intensive and we believe that all components between, artist, publisher and ASX will be an enriching environment for the participant.

The workshop is open up to a maximum of 16 participants. This workshop features three key components that students will have access to-the artist Mark Power, the publisher VOID and the American Suburb X platform.

To submit your work, send an email to talkto@void.photo with “Laboratory – Mark Power” as a subject with a PDF file (5 Mb max.) containing 10-15 images that best represent your body of work.

In the email, include a short C.V. and your reason for wanting to participate in the workshop.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
The investment for the 4-day workshop will be: €550 for the early birds (up to 6 seats, first come, first serve), which is due by September 2, 2019. Early birds are expected to pay the full amount by no later than October 4th. Participants registering after this date will not receive the early bird discount and are expected to pay €650.

International participants are encouraged to arrive one day before the workshop begins. It will also be expected to make their own travel arrangements, insurance and find accommodation.

We can advise on finding the accommodation that best suits you.
Important to note that most of the day time will be spent at Void.

All photographers must bring all necessary equipment, like cameras, laptops, memory stick, and whatever tools that apply to your creative process as tripods, flash, etc.

TODD HIDO
Todd Hido (born in Kent, Ohio, 1968) wanders endlessly, taking lengthy road trips in search of imagery that connects with his own memories. Through his unique landscape process and signature color palette, Hido alludes to the quiet and mysterious side of suburban America—where uniform communities provide for a stable façade—implying the instability that lies behind the walls. His photographs are in many private and public collections, including the Getty, Los Angeles; Whitney Museum of American Art; MoMA: San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Notably, Pier 24 Photography holds the archive of all his published works. He has published more than a dozen books, including the award-winning monograph Excerpts from Silver Meadows (2013) and the innovative B-side box set designed to function as a companion piece. His Aperture titles include Todd Hido on Landscapes, Interiors, and the Nude (2014), part of The Photography Workshop series, and the mid-career survey Intimate Distance: Twenty-Five Years of Photographs, A Chronological Album (2016). His latest book, Bright Black World, was released by Nazraeli press in the Fall of 2018. Hido is also a collector, and over the last twenty-five years has created one of the most notable photobook collections, which will be featured in Bibliomania: The World’s Most Interesting Private Libraries (Random House, 2019).

THE WORKSHOP
Participants will be chosen to spend 5 days working closely with Todd at Void’s space in the heart of Athens. The theme of the workshop is “The Cinematic”. This is a loose concept in which participants will be encouraged to construct a quasi-narrative which can be edited and sequenced into a large series of images in which implied visual communication through the production of “Cinematic photography” will be the starting point.

The participants will also have direct access to both the ASX and Void teams. ASX will be conducting interviews on site and will future a body of work at the end of the laboratory by one student the Void and ASX team chooses. Void will also be aiding in the production of a ZINE for the participants to take away at the end of the workshop. The participants will be asked to be involved in every step of the publishing process. ASX and Void will be directly involved in reviewing work and will be on site and working with Todd to bring the optimum workshop experience to each participant. This workshop features three key components that students will have access to-the artist Todd Hido, the publisher Void and the American Suburb X platform.

For the last night of the workshop, a public projection of the works will be held at Void. A public recorded conversation between Todd Hido and Brad Feuerhelm will also commence.
