Μαρία Κουμιανού – (M)otherness
Ο τίτλος του project αφορμάται από τη δήλωση της Simone de Beauvoir: “He is the Subject, he is the Absolute—she is the Other.” Επιχειρώ να διαπραγματευτώ τον όρο μητρότητα σε σχέση με το «Άλλο», όρος στον οποίο αναφέρεται η φιλόσοφος στο σύγγραμμά της «Το Δεύτερο Φύλο» και προτείνεται σαν προσωπική κριτική έναντι της κοινωνίας μας η παράφραση του ρητού της συγγραφέα:

Στo project επιλέγω έργα από το αρχείο μου που αναπαριστούν την κριτική της σκέψη έναντι του εαυτού μου και του κοινωνικού πλαισίου που με περιβάλλει. Εφευρίσκω και κατασκευάζω οπτικές αφηγήσεις αξιοποιώντας το φυσικό τοπίο της ελληνικής επαρχίας και το οικείο περιβάλλον της οικογένειάς μου. Ο Szarkowski στο The Photographer’s Eye σημειώνει ότι η φωτογραφία είναι ένα μέσο απόδοσης σημασίας σε αντικείμενα παρατήρησης και τονισμού των τυπικών ιδιοτήτων και ποιοτήτων τους. Η αλήθεια του φωτογράφου, εκτός στούντιο, θα μπορούσε να καταγραφεί μόνο ως εύρημα το οποίο θα χρησιμοποιήσει έπειτα ως τεκμήριο ώστε να διεκδικηθεί στη συνέχεια μία ιδιαίτερη σημασία, ένα νόημα που ξεπερνάει την απλή καταγραφή. Αξιοποιώ αυτόν τον τρόπο χρήσης του μέσου με αποτέλεσμα να προβάλλονται ασυνείδητα οι καθημερινές προκλήσεις της μητρότητας και η ζωή στην ελληνική επαρχία. Oπτικοποιώ οικειοποιημένες και χειραγωγημένες φωτογραφικά θεάσεις της καθημερινότητάς μου, που λειτουργούν ως εφαλτήρια σε ιδέες που συνδέονται με την απομυθοποίηση του στερεοτυπικά εξιδανικευμένο ρόλου της γυναίκας ως μητέρας σήμερα. Στόχος δεν είναι να προσφέρω μέσα από τη σειρά των φωτογραφιών κάποιο συγκεκριμένο αφήγημα. Προσδοκώ να μοιραστώ με το κοινό μία μορφή δημιουργίας που είναι ατμοσφαιρική, δυνητικά υπαινικτική και πάνω απ’ όλα, μια πρόσκληση προς τον θεατή για συνεργασία και εξερεύνηση όπου θα επιτραπεί το ατομικό βίωμα να γίνει ένα σύμβολο για το συλλογικό. Όπως λέει ο φωτογράφος Alec Soth, “Η φωτογραφία, όπως και η ποίηση, δεν παρέχει καμία δεξαμενή αφήγησης, προσφέρει τον βατήρα!”
Bio
Η Μαρία Κουμιανού γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα, ζει τα τελευταία 10 χρόνια στον τόπο καταγωγής της την Λήμνο και είναι εικαστικός φωτογράφος, επιμελήτρια εκθέσεων και δημιουργός διαδικτυακού περιεχομένου. Στη δουλειά της διαπραγματεύεται οπτικά, ζητήματα που αφορούν το ρόλο της γυναίκας-μητέρας στη σύγχρονη ελληνική κοινωνία. Οι εικόνες της επικοινωνούν την επαναλαμβανόμενη μάχη και θεραπεία μεταξύ μητέρας εαυτού και επαγγελματικού εαυτού, μητέρας εαυτού και σεξουαλικού εαυτού, μητέρας εαυτού και του παιδιού μέσα της. Εφευρίσκει και κατασκευάζει οπτικές αφηγήσεις που άπτονται στην ασάφεια του παραπάνω προτύπου/στερεότυπου επηρεασμένη από προσωπικές εμπειρίες στην καθημερινότητα της.
Maria Koumianou – (M)otherness
The title of the project is inspired by the statement of Simone de Beauvoir: “He is the Subject, he is the Absolute—she is the Other.” I attempt to negotiate the term motherhood in relation to the “Other”, a term to which the philosopher refers in her book “The Second Sex” and the paraphrase of the author’s saying is proposed as a personal criticism versus our society:
They are the Subject, They are the Absolute— mother is the Absolute Other
In (m)otherness I pick photographs from my personal archive that reflect critical thinking about myself and the social context that surrounds me. I invent and construct visual narratives utilizing the landscape of the Greek countryside and my family’s familiar environment. Szarkowski on The Photographer’s Eye asserts that photograph is a means of assigning significance to observed things and accentuating formal qualities. The photographer could not, outside of studio, pose the truth: he could only record it as he found it, and it was found in nature in a fragmented and unexplained form, but as scattered and suggestive clues. He could only isolate the fragment, document it, and by so doing claim it for some special significance, a meaning which went beyond simple description.
My use of the medium of photography in this manner, results to a representation of an unconscious projection of the daily challenges of motherhood and the every-day life in the Greek countryside. I visualize appropriated and manipulated photographic views of my life, which which serve as starting points for discussions related to the demystification of the stereotypical and idealized roles of women as mothers in contemporary society. The aim is not to present a specific narrative through the series of photographs. Instead, I intend to share with the public a form of artistry that is atmospheric, potentially evocative, and, above all, an invitation for viewers to collaborate and explore, where individual experiences are permitted to symbolize the collective. As photographer Alec Soth asserts: “Photography like poetry doesn’t provide the pool of narrative, just the diving board”.
Bio
Maria Koumianou was born in Athens, Greece. She moved to Lemnos Island 10 years ago where she lives and works ever since as an artist photographer, exhibition curator and a digital content creator. In her work she negotiates issues regarding genre, identity, femininity, sexuality and motherhood in the western society with emphasis within the Greek realm. She is particularly interested in an ambiguity which constantly tears and heals between the mother self and her professional self, between the mother self and her sexual self, between the mother self and her own child self. She invents and constructs visual narratives that touch on the ambiguity of the above stereotype influenced by personal experiences in her daily life.
