Aτομική έκθεση “Into The Dark” της φωτογράφου Έφης Χαλιορή
Η γκαλερί CAN παρουσιάζει την δεύτερη ατομική έκθεση της φωτογράφου Έφης Χαλιορή με τον τίτλο Into The Dark. Προσπαθώντας να νικήσει τον φόβο της για το σκοτάδι, η καλλιτέχνης ξεκινάει μία φωτογραφική περιπλάνηση (η οποία διήρκεσε περίπου 1,5 χρόνο) μέσα σε δάση και άλση κατά τη διάρκεια της νύχτας. Το αποτέλεσμα αυτής της αναζήτησης είναι ένα ευρύτερο σώμα εικόνων στις οποίες κυριαρχεί το έντονο φως πάνω σε δέντρα, κλαδιά και βράχια που ξεπροβάλουν επιθετικά μπροστά στον θεατή.
Ο κριτικός τέχνης Barry Schwabsky σε ένα κείμενο του για την “νυχτερινή” Γερμανίδα φωτογράφο Rut Blees Luxemburg περιγράφει πώς η σαφήνεια της μορφής στο έργο της “κατακλύζεται από αποχρώσεις και μερικές φορές ακόμη και από την απόλυτη ασάφεια των Μεγάλων Ζωγράφων”. Έτσι ακριβώς και η Χαλιορή στη σειρά Into The Dark καταφέρνει να μετουσιώσει την ένταση και τη συναισθηματική φόρτιση αυτής της περιπέτειας σε εικόνες που σκεπάζουν τη συγκίνηση της ίδιας και χαρακτηρίζονται από φορμαλιστική αρτιότητα, ηρεμία και ένα έντονα δραματικό chiaroscuro.
H Χαλιορή χρησιμοποιεί το φακό ή το φλας όχι μόνο σαν πηγή αλλά και σαν αφαίρεση. Κάτι που αποκαλύπτει αλλά και που διαθλά. Κι ενώ το φως μπορεί να παίζει κυρίαρχο ρόλο στη δημιουργία της εικόνας, στο έργο τελικά είναι σημαντικό και εκείνο που δεν βλέπουμε, δηλαδή το σκοτάδι. Κι έτσι “η κάμερα επιτρέπει … έναν μετασχηματισμό. Κάτι άλλο από αυτό που βλέπουμε στην καθημερινή μας εμπειρία … Κάτι που υπάρχει, αλλά ίσως το αισθανόμαστε καλύτερα από ό,τι μπορούμε να το δούμε.”
“Αναζητώ μια Ιστορία τoυ Βλέμματος” είχε γράψει ο Ρολάντ Μπαρτ το 1980 στο βιβλίο του Camera Lucida. “Γιατί η φωτογραφία είναι η έλευση του εαυτού μου ως άλλος: μια πονηρή διάσπαση της συνείδησης από την ταυτότητα.” Με την έγχυση του φωτός μέσα από τις σκιές του σκοταδιού, η καλλιτέχνης μετουσιώνεται και εκείνη ως άλλη. Η πραγματικότητα μετασχηματίζεται γεννώντας απροσδόκητες ψευδαισθήσεις που αμφισβητούν τα όρια ανάμεσα στην αλήθεια και το ψέμα. Το φως αποκαλύπτει και ταυτόχρονα δημιουργεί νέο περιεχόμενο.

Bio.
Η Έφη Χαλιορή (γ. 1969) ζει και εργάζεται στην Αθήνα. Σπούδασε Διοίκηση Επιχειρήσεων και Marketing στο Αμερικάνικο Κολλέγιο Ελλάδος και φωτογραφία στον Φωτογραφικό Κύκλο με δάσκαλο τον Πλάτωνα Ριβέλλη. Έχει παρακολουθήσει σεμινάρια και workshops με τους Michael Ackerman, Antoine Dagata, Anders Petersen, Simon Norfolk, Oliver Chanarin-Adam Broomberg, Arno Gisinger, Παύλο Φυσάκη και Κώστα Αντωνιάδη. Από το 2008 εργάζεται ως επαγγελματίας φωτογράφος. Έργα της έχουν εκτεθεί στην Ελληνοαμερικανική Ένωση, στο μουσείο Μπενάκη, στη γκαλερί Ζουμπουλάκη, στη γκαλερί Μορφές στο πλαίσιο του Med Photo Festival και στο Salon D’ Automne στο Παρίσι και την Κύπρο. Το πρώτο της φωτογραφικό λεύκωμα κυκλοφόρησε το 2013 από τις εκδόσεις Κίχλη. Φωτογραφίες της έχουν δημοσιευθεί σε διάφορα έντυπα και ηλεκτρονικά περιοδικά, ενώ έργα της βρίσκονται στη συλλογή των ξενοδοχείων Four Seasons, Grand Hyatt και σε ιδιωτικές συλλογές στην Ελλάδα, τη Γαλλία, την Ιταλία και τις ΗΠΑ.

CAN Gallery presents the second solo show by Efi Haliori under the title Into The Dark. In an effort to defeat her fear of darkness, the artist begins a night journey with her camera (that lasted almost 1,5 years) through the woods. The result of this quest is a wide body of work which is dominated by a bright light on trees, branches and rocks as they aggressively pop up in front of the viewer.
Art critic Barry Schwabsky on a text on the German photographer Rut Blees Luxemburg describes how clarity of form in her work “is overwhelmed by shades, nuances and sometimes even the downright Old-Masterish haziness.” The same way Haliori in her Into The Dark series manages to transcend all the tension and the emotional load of her adventure into images that cover up her feelings and are characterized by formalistic integrity, tranquility and a dramatic chiaroscuro.
The artist uses the flashlight and the camera flash not only as a source of light but also as a way to achive abstraction. To reveal and to refract. And while light plays a dominant role in the creation of the image, ultimately in the final work is equally important that which we do not see, namely darkness. This way “the camera allows … a transformation. Something other than what you see in your daily experience … Something which is there but perhaps can be sensed better than it can be seen.”
“I want a History of Looking” writes Roland Barthes in 1980 in Camera Lucida. “For the photograph is the advent of myself as other: a cunning dissociation of consciousness from identity.” By infusing light through the shadows of the dark, the artist turns herself into the other. Reality is transformed, springing up unexpected illusions that question the borders between lie and truth. The light unveals and at the same time it creates new content.

Bio
Efi Haliori (born 1969) lives and works in Athens. She studied Business Administration and Marketing at the American College of Greece and photography at the PhotoCircle under Platon Rivellis. She has attended a series of seminars and workshops by Michael Ackerman, Antoine Dagata, Anders Petersen, Simon Norfolk, Oliver Chanarin-Adam Broomberg, Arno Gisinger, Pavlos Fossakis and Kostas Antoniadis. Since 2008 she has been working as a professional photographer. Her works have been exhibited at the Hellenic American Union, the Benaki Museum, Zoumboulakis gallery, Morfes gallery as part of Med Photo Festival, and at the Salon D ‘Automne in Paris and in Cyprus. Her first photo book came out in 2013 by Kichli editions and her photographs have been published in various printed and electronic magazines. Works of hers feature in the collections of Four Seasons and Grand Hyatt Hotels and in various private collections in Greece, France, Italy and the USA.
